World Intellectual Property Day 2026: IP and Sports – Ready, Set, Innovate

24 April 2026

On 26 April, we celebrate World Intellectual Property Day and the vital role IP plays in powering innovation across the world of sport.

From cutting-edge sports medicine to immersive fan experiences, intellectual property enables organisations to invest in new technologies, protect their innovations, and bring transformative ideas to athletes and fans alike.

At the IP Federation, we are proud to represent members at the forefront of this innovation:

Smith+Nephew – A global leader in sports medicine, supporting healthcare professionals in their treatment of elite athletes and weekend warriors alike with advanced surgical technologies for joint, cartilage and tendon repair. Innovations such as the REGENETEN Bioinductive Implant and CARTIHEAL AGILI-C Cartilage Repair Implant are helping improve recovery times and support a ‘Life Unlimited’ for patients.

Philips – Harnessing advanced imaging, AI-driven analytics and wearable technologies to transform athlete care – from rapid sideline diagnostics to long-term performance monitoring and cardiac risk detection.

Nokia – Enabling life-like virtual entertainment, collaboration and education in sports by contributing technologies to the world’s first standards-based real-time volumetric video system to enable immersive 3D experiences.

Vodafone Group – One of Europe’s leading TV platforms, sponsoring and supporting national and international sport including the UEFA Champions League. Vodafone’s advanced 5G connectivity is driving innovation in sports performance for athletes, at stadiums and for fans.

Microsoft Limited – Providing cloud computing, AI, and data analytics platforms used by sports teams and organisations for performance analysis, fan engagement, and event management.

IBM UK Ltd – Offering AI and data-driven solutions (e.g. for tournaments like Wimbledon) to enhance fan insights, match analytics and digital experiences, and also partnering with Ferrari/Formula 1.

Canon Europe Ltd. – Supplying professional imaging and broadcast equipment widely used in sports photography and live event coverage.

As the global sports ecosystem evolves, strong and effective IP protection remains essential to:

✔️ Encourage investment in breakthrough technologies
✔️ Protect brands, content and innovation
✔️ Enhance athlete performance and welfare
✔️ Transform how fans experience sport

We join the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the global IP community in celebrating the innovators shaping the future of sport.
