The IP Federation welcomes the conclusion of the enhanced UK–Switzerland Free Trade Agreement and its Intellectual Property chapter, which reflects the shared commitment of both countries to innovation, creativity and investment. By building on existing international standards, the chapter provides greater certainty for businesses, investors, creators and innovators operating in two of the world’s most research-intensive and knowledge-driven economies.

We particularly welcome the commitments to maintain balanced and internationally competitive protections for pharmaceutical and agrochemical innovation, including regulatory data protection and supplementary protection certificates (SPCs). These provisions support the continued development of new medicines and agrochemical products by helping innovative companies invest in the long-term research and development needed to bring treatments to market, while maintaining the UK’s existing legislative framework and preserving the balance between innovation and access.

The announcement builds on the themes discussed at the “IP for Growth” event that the IP Federation was proud to co-host with the Embassy of Switzerland in the United Kingdom on 16 April 2026. Bringing together senior business leaders, policymakers and IP experts from both countries, the event highlighted a shared vision: that innovation, supported by strong and balanced intellectual property rights, promotes economic growth, encourages investment in R&D, and facilitates international trade. It is encouraging to see those principles reflected in this landmark agreement between two of the world’s leading innovation economies.
