The IP Federation welcomes the UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) which enters into force on 15 July 2026. It is the culmination of many years of work by the UK and Indian governments, as well as interested stakeholders including IP Federation.
The CETA has an IP Chapter setting out the obligations on intellectual property both countries have agreed to accept as part of the agreement. Through its engagement over many years with UK officials and with IP stakeholders in India, the IP Federation has increased the depth of its knowledge and understanding of the Indian IP system.
IP Federation members are big users of IP systems in almost all countries of the world. We believe strongly that industry expertise is key to making sure that IP systems around the world work well and balance the needs of stakeholders appropriately. Industry expertise is needed in negotiating trade agreements in the first place but successful outcomes from trade agreements depend on what industry does to leverage the opportunities arising from such agreements. That’s why on 7 July the IP Federation was delighted to meet a delegation of Indian IP stakeholders visiting London in connection with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) IP Mission to the UK. The meeting was a joint meeting hosted by the UK’s leading business organisation, the Confederation of British Industry. The timing could not have been better, given the imminent entry into force of the CETA.
In the meeting, CBI, CII and IP Federation members exchanged views on innovation and IP and had wide-ranging discussions on matters such as industry-led best practices in IP management, governance, and policy advocacy. Current and past presidents and officers of the IP Federation joined the meeting, reflecting India’s importance to IP Federation members. We opened channels for more in-depth discussion between our organisations on innovation and IP themes in the future. India has enormous economic potential and through our continued engagement with Indian industry we look forward to playing our part to boost trade and growth in both countries.
